Ingredients

For 1 serving
  • 1 scoop30 gWhey protein powder, vanilla or unflavoured
  • 1 cup245 gSkim milk, cold
  • 3/4 medium90 gRipe banana
  • 4 cubes100 gIce cubes
  • 1 tbsp16 gSmooth peanut butter (optional)
  • 1 pinchGround cinnamon (optional)

Steps

  1. 1

Peel the banana, measure out three quarters of it and break that into chunks.

  2. 2

Pour the cold skim milk into the blender first so the powder does not stick to the base.

  3. 3

Add the protein powder, banana chunks and ice cubes.

  4. 4

Add the peanut butter and cinnamon if using.

  5. 5

Blend on high for 30 to 45 seconds until smooth and frothy.

  6. 6

If it is too thick, blend for a few more seconds so the ice melts slightly and thins it.

  7. 7

Pour into a glass and drink straight away.

Swaps, storage and make-ahead

Swaps

  • For a dairy-free version, use unsweetened soy milk and a plant-based protein powder instead of skim milk and whey.
  • Swap the peanut butter for almond butter or sunflower seed butter if you prefer a different flavour or need to avoid peanuts.
  • Use frozen banana chunks in place of the ice cubes for a thicker, colder shake that is not watered down.
  • Leave out the peanut butter for a lighter shake, or add a few chunks of frozen mango for a fruitier taste.

Storage

This shake is best drunk fresh, as it separates and loses its froth as it sits. If needed, keep it covered in the fridge for up to 24 hours and shake or re-blend before drinking; do not freeze the finished shake.

Make ahead

Peel, portion and freeze the banana chunks in a bag ahead of time, and pre-measure the protein powder and cinnamon into a small container so you only need to add milk and peanut butter and blend.
