Swaps, storage and make-ahead

Swaps

  • For a dairy-free version, use unsweetened soy milk instead of the low-fat milk.
  • Make it vegan by swapping the milk for unsweetened soy or oat milk, since every other ingredient is plant-based.
  • For a gluten-free smoothie, use rolled oats labelled gluten-free, or leave the oats out.
  • If you have a peanut allergy, use sunflower seed butter instead of peanut butter, choosing one made in a peanut-free facility.

Storage

This smoothie is best enjoyed fresh, as it separates and the banana darkens on standing. If needed, cover and refrigerate within 2 hours and drink within 24 hours, shaking or re-blending first.

Make ahead

Slice and freeze the bananas in a bag, and portion the oats, peanut butter and cinnamon into a container in the fridge, so you only need to add milk and blend in the morning.
