Pasta with Tuna and Tomato
Pasta al tonno
A quick Italian store-cupboard classic: whole-wheat spaghetti tossed in a garlicky tomato sauce with flaky tuna, salty capers and a little chilli heat. It is light and high in protein, and it comes together while the pasta cooks.

Swaps, storage and make-ahead
Swaps
- Use regular white spaghetti instead of whole-wheat if that is what you have; just cook it to the time on the packet.
- Swap the canned tuna for drained canned salmon or cooked shredded chicken for a different protein.
- Replace the capers with a few chopped pitted black or green olives for a similar salty bite.
- For a gluten-free version, use a pasta labelled gluten-free and check that your canned tuna and tomatoes are labelled gluten-free too.
Storage
Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container within 2 hours and eat within 3 to 4 days, reheating until steaming hot with a splash of water to loosen the sauce. Freezing is not recommended, as the pasta and tuna turn soft and dry.
Make ahead
Make the tomato sauce with garlic, chilli and capers up to 3 days ahead and keep it covered in the fridge. Reheat it until simmering, stir in the tuna, and toss with freshly cooked spaghetti.
